Artist’s Bio
Richard is from Houston, Tx. He has always had a love for the arts and like many, he began as a self-taught artist. The Great Masters of art history always intrigued him, especially those depicting the human figure. His search to be trained in classical drawing and painting led him to find artists who were trained in the academy and atelier tradition.
The academy and atelier models grew out of an apprenticeship model. Its approach has its roots in the early renaissance. Students would train under a master for a period of time, before they set out on their own. The height of this tradition is the 19th century French ateliers. Students would be trained in drawing, painting, and sculpture of the human figure.
Richard studied at Grand Central Academy in New York. He also studied at the Janus Collaborative School of Art in Harlem. He studied under artists Jacob Collins, Dan Thompson, Michael Grimaldi, Kate Lehman, and Stephen Perkins.
He now lives with his wife and children in Houston, TX, where he practices and teaches drawing and painting at Winter Street studios.
